The Mets have pursued Gary Sheffield since 2000. But each time he slipped out of their grasp.

Once he signed with the Dodgers, and the other time with the Yankees.  Now at 40, bad shoulder, and strictly being used as a Designated hitter with the Tigers, the Mets expect a miracle. He hit .225 with 19 homers in 418 at bats last year. He did not fair better this spring, hitting only .178 , but had 5 homers ! He has only started 38 games in the outfield ,in the last three years. Is his shoulder sound ?…The Mets hope it is, otherwise he will be just wasted roster space.

Realistically, Sheffield should have looked to hook up with an American League team. At this stage of his career, he is better suited as a designated hitter. Maybe he wanted his next homer, which will be number 500 for his career to came in New York. Or, just maybe he thinks he has a chance to win it all with the Mets.

Maybe the Mets expect too much. But as a hitter, Gary Sheffield can still put fear in some opposing pitchers. Will he be happy playing part-time ?…We will see. Is the shoulder healthy enough for him to play some outfield ?…We will see . The Mets defintly needed a right handed bat in their lineup.

Maybe  Gary Sheffield is worth the $400,000 gamble after all.
