If there’s anything to be learned from sports retirements over the last few years, it’s not final until there’s a name chiseled on a tombstone. And with his recent suspension due to the drug policy, Manny Ramirez finds himself in an interesting position for a retiree. He could have opted not to retire right away, allowing himself to serve his suspension before retiring. With that strategy, Ramirez would be free to return to the game at any time rather than having to serve a suspension after having a moment of Favre like epiphany.
Ramirez also stands to potentially lose his shot at the Hall of Fame, as he stands to offend some people who hold HOF ballots. Retiring with a pending suspension isn’t exactly the most respectable way to go.
