In 2006 when the Maglio Ordonez sent the Detroit Tigers to the World Series, I was with my husband at a bar downtown Detroit. I was there for the drinks and could care less about baseball, I didn’t know the difference between Maglio Ordonez and Tony Hawk! Frankly, I didn’t care. Then Maglio hit the homerun bringing all the excitement to the whole city. Everyone in the bar exited immediatley while screaming with anticipation of the party that had already exploded in the street outdoors. I was almost trampled to the floor on the way out. Once we hit the streets strangers were chest bumping each other, hugging, high-fiving, and yelling to each other with friendly condensations. This excitement was enough to get me interested in the game of baseball.
Last night, I went straight home from work to watch the game. When Cabrerra (our alleged wife-beater), hit the first homerun, I was ecstatic thinking we were on our way to the playoffs. As the game continued and we were ahead, I was feeling pretty good about our chances. When the game was tied it up in the ninth inning, my heart sunk. Each inning would bring new runs for each team. It was very exciting, I love when a game is close, so close that there are extra innings. It is fun to get mad at the other team and fun to be proud of your team, back and forth. But last night was not one of the nights that I enjoyed. I was feeling anxious and as the game proceeded my anxiety grew. My feelings were changing too quickly, and when the game ended so abrubtly my anxious feelings crashed. My emotion at that time is hard to explain, I felt as if my parents were divorcing, my dog had died or my little brother was moving away. I felt sad. My husband was not helping either, he was very upset too, relentlessly blaming each of the players for there errors during the night.
I can say this. This incredible loss has not lessened my love of the game. I am looking forward to next season. I can only hope that the next season will bring a winning streak that continues from the beginning of the season to the end of it for the Detroit Tigers.
