Ouch! Ouch!! Ouch!!!
I am a fan of the Chicago Cubs baseball team. They lost Saturday night. Their season is over and I need your help.
This series reminds me of the ground ball through Leon Durham’s legs in 1984, my first Cubs postseason. It reminds me that key hitters took the 1989 series off against San Francisco. It reminds me of…oh, no, the Bartman play against Florida in 2003 (not to mention Alex Gonzalez’ error). The Cubs haven’t won the World Series in 100 years.
And now, our best pitcher, Ryan Dempster, walks seven guys in one game? And then the next game every infielder makes an error?
We had the best record in the National League this year. Great pitchers. Excellent hitters. So now it comes to this? Another series sweep? Two years in a row?
I feel like this lady bug in the snow: out of place.
What’s a Cubs fan to do?
I COULD LAUGH. Laughing would enable me to brush this playoff loss off. If I treat the Cubs in the postseason as a joke, maybe I’ll feel better. After all, it is just a game, just entertainment. No big deal. But still we lost.
I COULD CRY. Crying would enable me to mourn what could have been. I’m a firm believer in grieving loss in my life. But should I actually grieve the losses of my baseball team? This isn’t life or death stuff. Can I grieve baseball like I grieved the loss of a friend? No way. But still we lost.
I COULD WAIT AGAIN ‘TIL NEXT YEAR. The 2009 season starts in six months. That isn’t too long to wait. By March the Cubs will have made some changes in their roster. Hope will be renewed. Spring training brings out the best in all baseball hearts. But still we lost.
The Cubs are my favorite sports team. My childhood is ingrained with Cubs memories. I have watched easily over a thousand Cubs games in my life time. 1000+!
I don’t know what to do. I need your help. Make a comment below and tell me what to do. I will always be a Cubs fan, so please don’t tell me to change teams. Tell me to get a life. Tell me to stop watching sports. Tell me to stop supporting the Cubs, wait until the Cubs do win the World Series, and then begin following them again. I cannot be that fair-weathered.
Tell me something, please. And please be nice to my wounded heart.
It is time for bed. Tomorrow I will wake up and life will go on and I will put this loss into perspective of what’s really important. All will be okay. By the end of next week, I’ll start feeling better.
But still we lost.
I had lots of happiness this year watching a lot of Cubs wins, 97 of them. We had a great year! Congratulations to the Cubs on winning the National League Central Division. What a fun year it was. Until the playoffs when…
Still we lost.
I guess I’ll wait again ‘til next year.

I have been a Cub fan since Ron Santo was a rookie. I remember going to Wrigley and they wouldn\’t even open the upper deck. Or going in the 60\’s to see my heroes play the Mets in a double header because I had never been to a Cub game where the Cubs had won! And to see the Cubs get swept on that day both by a score of 3-2. Unbelievable and then to see the Cubs play great all year in \’69 and watch that miserable Met\’s team again overtake my Cubbies and go to the World Series, and it goes on and on, but yet, there I am every year cheering them on and wearing the Cubs colors. I take solace in the fact that the Cubs have actually become a team and an organization that the big boys have to worry about. We finally have a minor league system. We are making enough money and garner enough respect that we can sign almost any ball player that we desire. So I look forward still with even more optimism and hope. Soon we will have a new ownership that I am sure will be dedicated as the sale price is going to be enormous. So fellow Cub fan head up, believe and look forward to even more good times ahead. This team will be a contender year in and year out now. Not like in years past where if we had a good year it was a fluke and you would not have any idea when we would have another good year. So keep singing,…Go Cubs Go, Go Cubs Go, Hey Chicago whattya say,…we\’ll be back next year.
Hi, Friend, thanks for pointing me forward! And you make a great point that this organization has really turned around during this decade, a HUGE fact that the world outside of CubNation doesn’t empasize at all. There are lots of positive signs that serve as a salve for this offseason.
Dude, good stuff. I’m a south side Cubs fan that now lives in San Diego…… Since our self destruction against the Dodgers, I have laughed, cried and now I’m waiting until next year….
Ryan, thanks man. The postseason was rough on both Chi teams! Oh, well. Hey enjoy San Diego. I was there once and it was sweet.
Cubs had a great season, and Lou will have them back in the thick of things next year. They are looking to upgrade their already good pitching staff with a couple of free agents this fall. 2009 could be the year of the CUBS!
