Catcher’s Gear

What to buy and what not to buy.

Buying catcher’s gear is not just a major purchase; it’s an investment in the safety of yourself or a loved one. So you want to make sure you get the good, safe, but affordable gear. If you are buying for a child (between 7 and 10 years old) you may want to consider a youth catcher equipment set. A good one is the “Rawlings youth catcher’s set”. it contains an all in one catchers helmet, a 13-in Quick Fit™ chest protector, two 13-in single knee leg guards, 2 bonus wristbands, and a throat protector (required in most little leagues).

And it only costs between $95.00 and 120.00 which is an amazing bargain. It also comes in many colors to match any team uniform. However if you are buying for someone older than 10 you will need to unfortunately spend more. However don’t be afraid to “mix and match” the equipment so that you can save some money but if really want to buy a set, I would recommend the samurai gear from Mizuno. It’s expensive ($240.00) but really, really worth the money. The helmet is a cross between a hokey style mask and a traditional style mask and features amazing ventilation technology.

The chest protector has removable shoulder protectors, and removable “wings that rap around that abdomen for added protection when diving to catch a wild pitch. And the shin guards I can’t even begin to explain how versatile they are and how much protection they offer. When a somewhat experienced catcher sees these their eyes will light up as if it was Christmas day. This equipment is really cool and worth every penny. But on another note make sure to buy a throat guard because most leagues require them (even if the wire on the mask extends down to the neck) and they generally cost about $13.00. Also on an older catcher (high school) the knees take a beating, so be sure to pick up some “knee savers” which are pads that attach onto the back of you shin guards and take some of the strain off of your knees
