Booing Cubs Fans Disappoint in Loss to Dodgers

Even though the Chicago Cubs lost Game one against the LA Dodgers in the MLB playoffs, the Cubs baseball fans were the real disappointment.

I am a life-long Cubs fan. Boy, was last night’s game disappointing. Our best pitcher, Ryan Dempster, had his worst game of the year. That is not a very good start to the postseason. Cubs fans are no doubt nervous about Carlos Zambrano pitching Game 2. This series could get ugly fast.

As disappointed as we Cubs fans are, I am more disappointed in the fans themselves, the fans who went to the game.

Cubs fans have a right to be disappointed in the play of the Cubs. Soriano whiffed. Dempster struggled. Every pitcher gave up at least one run. But that’s baseball folks.

I couldn’t believe the crowd. The TBS announcers couldn’t believe the crowd. I wonder what the Cubs players thought about the crowd?

The crowd was quiet. The crowd was nervous. The crowd was expecting another playoff loss. How many times did we hear the chant, “Let’s Go Cubbies!” Hardly any. How many times did we hear boos by beleaguered fans blown towards our beloved players? Way too many.

Let’s give this team a chance. This team had nothing to do with 1945, 1984, 1989, 2003. Hey, Man, is anyone going to boo you at the office today? Hey, Lady, do you want anyone looking over your shoulder as you take care of your kids? Maybe Ryan Dempster, one of our favorite and most respected players, will come back and pitch a shutout in Game 5. Maybe our cheers will help him to do that. On the other hand, our boos will only make everyone feel worse.

Athletes are real people too. Everyone will have a bad night. I know, the Cubs have had a bad century, I’ll give you that.

I didn’t have the pleasure of going to the game. My Mom took me to a Cubs game every year in the 1970’s and early 80’s. But I’ve watched many of this year’s games on television and I was glued to the set last night.

I wasn’t expecting the Cubs to lose. Nor was I expecting them to win. The tension was thick but I tried to sit back and enjoy the game. That was rough! But I learned a lot from the 2003 League Championship Series loss to the Florida Marlins.

After the Bartman incident, I fell apart like every other Cubs fan. After losing Game 7, I was so sad.

We need to get the curse stuff out of our heads and our hearts. I’m encouraged by my response to last night’s loss, and I think the Cubs will bounce back tomorrow night. They are just too good of a team. Maybe I’ll be wrong. Maybe I’ll be right.

But this article is about Cubs fans, not baseball. The Cubs will play this series and they’ll either win or lose and then they’ll go on with their lives.

Cubs fans: get a life.

As a diehard Cubs fan, I learned from the 2003 dramatics. My wife was right. It is just a game! No more emotional baggage for me. I got that out of my system five years ago.

Hey, the Cubs have had a great 2008. And it’s not over yet. Cubs fans: hang in there! Enjoy the games. It is sport. It is a game. It is entertainment.

Let’s cheer. Let’s hope our Cubbies win tonight and sweep in Los Angeles and beat the Phillies for the National League pennant and win the World Series over the Boston Red Sox.

Cubs fans: relax. Enjoy the games.

Let’s give this team a chance. Let’s give our hearts a break. If they lose, at least we experienced a lot of happiness this year. The way I look at it, we have nothing to lose and a World Series title to gain. Don’t let the Cubs rule your life. Overcome your emotions and enjoy the games!

Thanks, Dale. I appreciate that. You guys have a good-looking team. It will be tough for the Cubs to bounce back 2nite, but I think they will.

Kinda hard on the fans, aren’t ya Brian? Of course, I’m not a cubs fan nor particularly a fan of baseball, so I have no right to write, right? Might want to avoid traditional views on men and women. Hey, I guess it’s me being hard on you. Ciao.

Great article. We fans forget players are people, with hearts, skin and feelings. With this reminder maybe we can enjoy the games and keep the right perspective. The players don’t ‘mess up’ on purpose! They are individuals with lives outside of baseball too. Keep writing!

Hi, Momma, great perspective that players don’t mess up on purpose…so why do we hold our bad feelings against them? Brian

Nice piece. I know the Cubs were disappointing in their series with the Dodgers, but anything can happen in the playoffs. I really do think the Cubs were the best team, and the regular season statistics will prove me right. I think that the Cubs will improve their team during the off-season and address some weaknesses. Then next year during the playoffs, the experience they gained from this years shortcomings, will serve them well. Cubs in the world series in 2009.

PR and hfj, thanks for reading. You are right, they may be better now (not sure how the bullpen will be though without Kerry) with the Milton Bradly signing.
