Asterisk or no asterisk Barry Bonds is by far the best hitter of all time.  He even makes a bid at the best all around player the game has ever seen.  Consider the following records…

  1. Home runs against different pitchers 449
  2. Home runs after being 40 years old 74
  3. Home runs in a single season 73
  4. Consecutive seasons with a .600 slugging percentage (or higher) 8
  5. Consecutive games with a walk 18
  6. Intention walks in a single season 120
  7. Walks in a single season 232
  8. On base percentage in a single season .609
  9. Number of Nation League player of the month selections 13
  10. Home runs in a single post season 8 (tied)

Barry Bonds holds every one of these records.  This is incredible. The list touches on all aspects of hitting in the game of baseball.  Bonds got on base more than anyone else in a single year.  A large contribution to this was his walks, specifically his intentional walks.  This shows how much respect the best pitchers in the game gave Barry bonds.  Bonds was even intentionally walked with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth with his team down by two runs.  (The play worked out and the next hitter became the third out of the inning and the Giants lost the game).  This type of fear from pitchers at the Major League level is incredibly rare and even unheard of before Barry Bonds.  He was consistent in both his power and his contact hitting.  His slugging percentage was exceptional at over .600 for eight years in a row.  Many players do not even have careers that last for eight years.  Bond’s selection as the National league Player of the Month 13 times again shows the respect that other players gave him….not only pitchers but coaches and athletes around the league.  The legendary Pete Rose was only selected for this honor six times in his amazing career.  Besides power Barry Bond’s was able to steal 514 bases making him the 32nd best base stealer in the history of the game.  With 2,395 base hits Bond’s was 31st on the all time list for career hits.  Not only was he hitting the ball out of the park but he was also helping is team out with singles, doubles, and triples as well. Barry Bond’s is one of, if not the greatest baseball player that has ever lived and he stands at the top of many honorable record list.  Until someone can break his all time home run record along with all the other records he holds…Barry Bonds will stand as the greatest hitter of all time.
